A Dream - scene 1

Main characters:
Alice- Female, ten year old, Born in New Zealand but no accent, Blond- wavy-puffy hair half way through her back, black formal flat shoes with Velcro strap, white ruffled edge socks, blue polka doted with white dots and an ruffled trimmed apron- dirty and banged up, Wore locket with picture of her as a baby and picture of parents, feeling mad- sad, dances, sings- acts-gymnastics, goes to church every other day for 3-6 hours and dislikes it.

Ashley- Female, ten also, Born in L.A, brown-shiny hair, silver flats dark jeans, blouse with ruffles in a straight line in front, wore her lucky head band- blue, Has her books in hand, feeling bad for Alice, Cheer- Dance- gymnastics.

Mrs.Gatlin-Female, 54 years old, born in Kentucky, ear length hair –light brown, High heeled brown shoes, Brown not form fitting suit, Wares glasses that are outlined dark brown, Has work sheets in her hand, very strict, teaches.

Setting:
Time: Wednesday January 23, 1999
Place: Hallway at school, next to their lockers

At Rise:
Alice and Ashley are talking to each other next to their lockers

ALICE
(Friendly)
Hey, Ashley are you doing something tonight?

ASHLEY
(Friendly)
I don’t know, but I think that I’m free. Why?


ALICE
Well… I want you to come to my show called “Fire and Ice” because my mom doesn’t what to go.

ASHLEY
Alice, I would think that your mom would want to help you live your dream of being an actress/ singer.

ALICE
Well I want her to also, but she won’t! So I’ll have to live with it.

ASHLEY
We need to get to class now so let’s go.

ALICE
Ok. Wait, did we have homework last night!?

ASHLEY
Yes, we had to finish our Presentation of Learning stuff (Alice looks at her weirdly) you know, the POL packets.

ALICE
Oh, well I didn’t do that soooo (pause) Well what are we doing in class today?

ASHLEY
I think Mrs.Gatlin is going to teach us what water is made out of and how it evaporates. (Sarcastically) Whooo!

ALICE
(Walking into classroom)
Hey, don’t forget to ask your mom if you can come to my show. Tickets are normally 10$-20$ each.

ASHLEY
Ok, ok, I’ll remember to tell her.


ALICE
(Mrs. Gatlin (teacher) is organizing papers on her medium brown table which has a bamboo plant on it (1 foot high) and tons of random papers) (Talking to her teacher)
Um, Mrs.Gatlin, I don’t think that you should punish me for not doing my homework because my mom forgot all about me at my rehearsal for: “Fire and Ice” She wants me to be a swimmer, so I can win the championships just like her and she doesn’t want me to live my dreams, so she was late picking me up and I didn’t have any time to finish it.

MRS.GATLIN
(In a “Yeah right” pose)
Yeah, and I was stuck at Taco Bell because my husband forgot to eat there and pick me up.

ALICE
No really!!! My mom did forget me. My mom doesn’t want me to be an actor/singer so she tries to make me quit.

MRS.GATLIN
Just go sit down now, because I know your mom and she would never do that to you.

ALICE
Well she does, and if you don’t believe me, then fine!!!

MRS.GATLIN
Ok class, today we are going to be talking about what water is made of and how it evaporates into thin air!

ASHLEY
(Silently to Alice)
Told you!

ALICE
Well, I never disagreed.

AHLEY
Well, still I was right after all.


ALICE
I know.

MRS.GATLIN
Ms. Alice, are you talking while I’m talking?

ALICE
(Showing guilt)
No.

MRS.GATLIN
Well, I heard you so go to the principal’s office. (Pause while Alice doesn’t move a bit) NOW!!!!!

ALICE
Ok, you don’t have to yell.

MRS.GATLIN
(Turns back to the board) As I was saying class, water is made out of one hydrogen and two oxygen.

ALICE
(Furious and talking to herself)
I hate it when she catches me talking to Ashley, I just hate it!!!!!


BLACKOUT

A Dream - scene 2

Main characters:
Alice, Ashley
Suzie- She is a 30 year old woman, stage manager, with light brown, wavy hair with highlights in a darker brown. She is wearing a pretty cream and black dress with a black strip across it on the top, black slip-on high heels.
Setting:
Time: Wednesday January 23, 1999
Place: Behind the stage of her show
At Rise: Ashley is walking backstage to wish Alice good luck.

ASHLEY
(Running slowly in)
Hey I made it!!!

ALICE
Thanks soooo much for coming. You are my best friend ever!

ASHLEY
So did your mom come this time?

ALICE
(Sarcasticly)
What do you think?

ASHLEY
(Eyes open widely but not looking funny)
Uhh….No.

ALICE
Exactly. I think that she will never come.

(SUZIE)
(Interrupting their conversation)
Alice 10 minutes till show time.

ALICE
Ok, thanks Suzie.

ASHLEY
Who was that?

ALICE
That’s Suzie my stage manager.

ASHLEY
She seems nice

ALICE
She is most of the time, but if you get her angry, she can be kind of ferocious.

ASHLEY
(Walking away)
Well I think it’s almost time for the beginning of the show, so I better get going .Good luck.

ALICE
(Little wave and little nod of head)
Thanks a lot (Pause while Alice dials a number on her phone)
Hey mom, you sure you can’t come? I mean this is one of my favorite shows out of all of them!! (Pause for longish time) I know you’ve told me millions of time that you don’t want to come, but, I just wanted to ask one more time cuz I really want you to see me in a play for once. (Pause longish) (Sad) Ok, good bye.

SUZIE
Alice, 3 more minutes until you’re on stage.

ALICE
(Depressed)
Ok, thanks.



SUZIE
What’s wrong? Just a few minutes ago you were so siked = (sie-ked) to be on stage and were ready to act and sing. What happened?


ALICE
Well, my mom isn’t coming to this show, so I’m kind of sad.

SUZIE
Well, don’t let that get in the way of your acting. You are an amazing actress. No one can take that away from you. Just remember that all of the stage crew knows you, and they are always supporting you. Ok?

ALICE
I guess so.

SUZIE
Well, get out there and have a great show!!!!

ALICE
Ok (starts walking, stops and turns towards Suzie, Alice lightens up her face with a little more joy) you know what Suzie? Thanks for everything.

SUZIE
You’re welcome.

A Dream - scene 3

Alice

Setting:
Time: Thursday January 24, 1999
Place: No place
At Rise: Alice is being shined on with lights and can’t see any back round; she is sitting on a wooden black chair.

ALICE
My mom always leaves me. Do you know how that feels? Well I always hear, “I think, I want, I know”, from my mom but she never says, “What do you want, what do you like, what (raising her voice) do I stinken want!!!!!!!” All I want is for her to like me for who I am and what I want to do. All I want is for her to stop living my life, because I have more years than her. You know what I would wish for? I would wish that she would be a character named Juliet in a play called “Drop Dead Juliet” because in the end of the play Juliet has a painful death. I would love that life so much I could picture it now. (Looking up into the light that is shining on you, with a dreamy face) I can see myself performing in every show I can get into and having a chauffer because I can’t drive, and hopefully he won’t be late to pick me up. Maybe if I just tell her to stay out of my life she might………….. Wait, what am I thinking. Of course she won’t. She is never going to support me. She will never, ever be nice, except for that time when I broke my arm. She was there every second I was scared and she comforted me every day. (Pause) Wait that gives me an idea…….

(Small black out)
(Next day)

Main characters:
Alice, Ashley,
Alice’s mom- Is a 39 year old lady, dirty blond hair, wears an kind of ugly matching tan suit with a white blouse underneath, White 2 inch heels, Fire engine red circularish puffy bag


Setting:
Time: Thursday January 24, 1999
Place: Home of Alice
At Rise: Alice is one the top of the stair getting ready to fall

MOM
Come on Alice!! Time for breakfast.

ALICE
Coming mom!!! (Running down the stairs and falls right on her ankle)

MOM
Running through door) Alice are you ok?!!!

ALICE
No it hurts really, really bad.

MOM
Hopefully you didn’t break your ankle or seriously injure it!!

ALICE
I hope so to!

MOM
(Looking and gently touching ankle while Alice does tiny moans and groans) What did you do!!?

ALICE
I ran down the stairs and I guess I tripped on something.




MOM
Ok I am going to call my friend over to check on you, because I am afraid to move you.

ALICE
K, first can you hand me my phone on that table there.

MOM
Ok (hands her the phone, then goes of stage right into a open doorway)

ALICE
(Opens the phone and dials 7 numbers on her hot pink cell phone then holds it up to her ear) Hey, Ashley can you come over here because I was planning to pretend fall but I actually did fall and now it really hurts. (Pause) Hurry!!! (Closes the phone)

MOM
(Mom comes in and squats down next to Alice) She will be here in a couple of moments, Ok, just hang on.

ALICE
Ok

MOM
Do you need anything?

ALICE
Yeah, some room temperature water please.

MOM
Ok be right back (Walks into the same room she was just in)


ALICE
(Talking to herself) I think that I should tell her at least what happened. (Stops and looks towards the door as the mom comes back into the room)


MOM
Here you go. (Handing the glass of water to Alice)

ALICE
Thanks. (Doorbell rings)

MOM
I’ll get it (Opens the door and Ashley comes in)

ASHLEY
Hey Alice how is your ankle doing?

ALICE
Well, it hurts really badly.

ASHLEY
That’s too bad (Doorbell rings) who is that?

MOM
That’s my friend Cilvia. She is a great doctor! (Opens the door) Hey Cilvia!

CILVIA
Hey, so where is she?

MOM
She is on the living room floor.

CILVIA
(Approaches Alice and touches her ankle) Does that hurt?

ALICE
YES!!!! (Yelling) A lot!!


CILVIA
Um, Mary, I am assuming that Alice’s ankle is broken.

MOM
(Sarcasticly) Ok well that’s just great!!

(Cilvia pulls over Ashley and starts talking to her in a very low voice)

ALICE
Um, Mom can you come over here for a sec. The reason why this happened was because I wanted you to care for me and the only way you would do that would be if I broke some part of my body.

MOM
So you planned to go through all of this pain and suffering just for me to be nice to you?

ALICE
Well I wasn’t planning to actually break my bone I just wanted to fake it, but that didn’t work out so well.

MOM
I guess not. (Pause) Hunny I know that I haven’t been treating you as well I could but maybe if you just talked to me about it, I might have listened and changed.

ALICE
Well, I know how you are, and that would have never happened.

MOM
I guess you are right, but at least now I know that I have to change. (Pause) Right?!

ALICE
Yeah, I guess you are right! (Pause and smiling) Um Mom thanks a lot for what you do.


MOM
Your welcome sweetie (Mom and Alice hug)
